Indonesian culture is a mixture of many religions. Central Java is predominantly Muslim. There are many Islamic and Christian universities located right across the street. Tourists flock to Hindu temples such as Borobudur. Indonesians are proud of their strong family traditions.

Islam

Islam is Indonesia’s dominant religion. Indonesian Muslims are predominantly Sunni, with approximately 3% Shia Muslims, mostly in Jakarta, and 400,000 Ahmadi Muslims (a small minority of 0.2% of the population). Although 85% of Indonesians practice Islam, Indonesia is not a secular Islamic state. Only six religions are recognized by the country's Constitution. Most Indonesians identify closer to their nationality rather than with their religion.

Gamelan

Gamelan refers to an Indonesian traditional orchestra that plays traditional music. It is primarily composed of percussion instruments, but sometimes also includes wind instruments, string instruments, and voices. It also includes dancers. The instruments are typically placed in a specific pattern on a floor and include three types double-sided drums, an xylophone and a two-stringed violin.


Batik

Batik is an important part Indonesian culture. It has been in use for centuries, and its rich patterns reflect the blending of various cultures. According to UNESCO culture heritage is more than monuments or artifacts. It includes oral traditions, social practices, traditional crafts, and knowledge of how to make them. These intangible cultural resources are critical for maintaining cultural diversity in the era of globalization.

Ramadan

Muslims in Indonesia celebrate Ramadan in a variety of ways. For example, Muslims in Bali welcome Ramadan with the Megibung ritual. Gibung, which means "sharing", is the name of this ritual. This ritual involves eating together and sitting in circles. The Indonesian tradition of this ritual dates back centuries and is still practiced today.

Traditional games

Gobak Sodor, one of Indonesia's most beloved traditional games, is a very popular one. It is a team sport that involves players drawing boxes on the ground and walking from one box with one foot. This game is also known as Galah Asin in some regions. It is still played in various ceremonies in Indonesia today.
