Half of those surveyed said that they believe not in God but in a higher power or force. When asked why they do not believe in God, more than half said that they do not believe in God, but they believe in a higher power or spiritual force that is beyond themselves.
Transcendent belief
Transcendence is the belief in a higher power that exists above and beyond what we see. It doesn't have to be a spiritual or god-like entity. It can even be a thought. For example, the executives at Enron promoted the notion that their company was revolutionizing commerce by being ethical and right.
Many religions are familiar with the idea of transcendent beliefs. Different religions may hold different views on the nature and purpose of god. However, they all believe that there is a powerful, transcendent power who orchestrates all events in our lives. Although there are many theories about the nature of god, the most important thing is that it created the universe.
Agnosticism
The Greek word for "without god" and atheisme in French are what give rise to the term agnostic. Agnosticism, however is not synonymous with atheism. While some people do not believe in any god, this belief does not preclude anyone from having a spiritual life.
Agnosticism refers to a philosophical belief that God's existence is unknown. Agnosticism, contrary to atheism is a philosophical position that holds that there are many truths to be discovered about the universe and life.
Apathy
Apatheism is the basic definition of a person who lacks faith in a higher power. Apatheists believe they can attain existential security without God. Apathy towards God can be described as the opposite of love. This is contrary to Scriptures.
Psalm 14 describes a person, for example, as someone who lacks the need to God. So, the hiker fled from a bear without remembering its specific characteristics. The absence of emotion can lead to apathy.
